INDIAN RAILWAYS TRAIN FARE, RESERVATION & OTHER CHARGES


Before booking a ticket, we must have an idea about the total money to be paid for the ticket. Train fare depends on Category of Train, Travel Distance, Class, Age of Passenger [ Child (5-11), Child (above 12)/ Adult, Senior Citizen Female (58 and above), Senior Citizen Male (60 and above)], Type of Quota (General, Tatkal, Premium Tatkal), period of the year (lean/ peak) and type of concession (Student, certain categories of Patients,  Sports person, and many more).

Train fare for all classes consists of Base Fare plus other miscellaneous charges like Reservation Fee, Superfast Charge, Catering Charge, Service Tax etc. There is a minimum Base Fare for all classes for a certain range of distance. The range of distance is different for different classes, as it is clear from the following tables.

From Table-I which is for Express Trains, we can see that for Sleeper Class travel, there is a minimum Base Fare of Rs. 120 which remains unchanged whether one travels 1 km or 200 km. This amount changes only when one travels beyond 200 km. There is additional charge in form of Reservation Charge and Superfast Charge which may also include Service Tax and Catering charges, if applicable. Similar is the case with all other classes of travel.

Peak and Lean Periods are as explained below:-

Peak Periods: 1st April to 31st July and 1st September to 31st January
Lean Periods: 1st February to 31st March; and 1st August to 31st August

It may please be noted that for the “Popular” Trains’ segment, the Peak Period fares will be charged throughout the year for AC First and AC 2-Tier Classes.

It is important to keep in mind the following points while booking a railway ticket:-

  • No fare will be charged for the Children under 5 years of age, though their name should appear on the ticket. Half of the adult fare will be charged from the children above the age of 5 years and under the age of 12 years, without providing ant separate berth. However, children above the age of 5 years and under 12 years of age will be charged corresponding to adult fare when seprate berth is required for child.
  • Free food will be provided to the children under 5 years of age in Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express trains.
  • Bed-rolls at no extra charge will be supplied to passengers in AC First Class, AC 2-Tier and AC 3-Tier Classes in all trains, except Garib Rath Express trains.
  • Bed-rolls can be supplied on demand on payment of fixed charges to the passengers in Garib Rath Express trains and in Sleeper Class of Mixed Duronto Express trains.
