  • No need of internet, computer or electricity for train ticket booking through SMS. This makes it very advantageous for rural areas where such facilities are generally not available.

Essential Requirement: 

To start with, you must be registered with IRCTC. During registration, login ID and password will be created for IRCTC. This can be done either by visiting www.irctc.co.in and creating a valid user account or by sending SMS to 139. The process is explained below.

1. Send SMS to 139 in the following format.


REG [First Name] [Last Name] [Date of Birth DDMMYY]
For example REG Rajesh Kumar 140490

2. You will receive a response SMS from 139 similar to one given below.

Thank you for registration request. Your registered Username is sc201749.

3. To receive activate this account, send one more SMS to 139 in the following format.

REGCODE [TPIN]

For example, REGCODE 5381 
Please note that TPIN number is to be decided by the customer.

4. You will receive a response SMS from 139 similar to one given below.

You have been successfully registered with IRCTC. Your user id is kp285749 and password is 4893. You can use this ID for ticket booking and also for login to www.irctc.co.in. Thank you for using SMS 139 services.

After getting registered with IRCTC, you need a way to make payment for booking ticket. This can be achieved in following ways.

Booking Train Ticket Through MOBIKWIK


First of all, you need a MOBIKWIK wallet. To get it, visit www.mobikwik.com and click on CREATE WALLET which is displayed at the top right corner of the home page. Using valid email ID and mobile number, create a password. The same mobile number should also be registered with IRCTC. You can add money in the wallet by clicking on Add Money. The payments for adding money to the wallet can be made through credit / debit cards, net banking and also by cash payment.

Now, you can book ticket in only two simple steps, as explained below.

Step 1: Send the details of train number, starting station, final station, travel date, class and passengers details (maximum 6 passengers) in prescribed format to 139.

 BOOK <Train No> <From City> <To City> <Travel Date (DDMM)> <Class> <Passenger1-Name> <Age> <Gender> <Passenger2-Name> <Age> <Gender> <MOBI> (Upto 6 passengers) 

For example:

BOOK 12420 NDLS ALJN 1208 2S Raju 55 M Saroj 52 F MOBI

If the sent SMS is correct as per format, the customer receives a Transaction ID from 139:

Trans Id: 28026734 Ticket Amount: 180 IRCTC SC: 30 Total Amount: 210 Seat: AVAILABLE-0142. For Payment SMS PAY 28026734 MOBI <OTP> <IRCTC User ID> to 139 to book ticket.

Step 2: For payment, send another SMS in the prescribed format to 139:

PAY <Transaction ID as received> MOBI <OTP> <IRCTC User ID> 

For example:

PAY 28026734 MOBI 214598 Raju

If the sent SMS is correct as per format the the ticket confirmation message is received from 139:

Your ticket booked successfully. PNR is: 3862561079 Ticket No: 0469573683 Booking Status: Raju CONFIRM C3 56 WS Saroj CONFIRM C3 57 Ticket Amt: 180.0 SC: 30 Src: New Delhi Dst: Aligarh Date of Journey: 12/08/2015 Sch Dep 12:30 hrs

Booking Train Ticket Through VODAFONE MPESA


To open m-pesa account, you can register online through www.mpesa.in or by visiting a Vodafone m-pesa agent outlet and completing certain formalities. You can deposit money in your m-pesa account through m-pesa agents. You need a vodafone mobile.

Now, you can book ticket in only two simple steps, as explained below.

Step 1: Send the details of train number, starting station, final station, travel date, class and passengers details (maximum 6 passengers) in prescribed format to 139.

 BOOK <Train No> <From City> <To City> <Travel Date (DDMM)> <Class> <Passenger1-Name> <Age> <Gender> <Passenger2-Name> <Age> <Gender> <MPESA> (Upto 6 passengers) 

For example:

BOOK 12420 NDLS ALJN 1208 2S Raju 55 M Saroj 52 F MPESA

If the sent SMS is correct as per format, the customer receives a Transaction ID from 139:

Trans Id: 28026734 Ticket Amount: 180 IRCTC SC: 30 Total Amount: 210 Seat: AVAILABLE-0142. For Payment SMS PAY 28026734 MPESA <MPESA Account PIN> <IRCTC User ID> to 139 to book ticket.

Step 2: For payment, send another SMS in the prescribed format to 139:

PAY <Transaction ID as received> MPESA <MPESA Account PIN> <IRCTC User ID> 

For example:

PAY 28026734 MPESA 4269 Raju

If the sent SMS is correct as per format the the ticket confirmation message is received from 139:

Booking Train Ticket Through ICICI BANK


To book train ticket through ICICI Bank, you need an account in the bank. For payment, money is debited directly from your account.

Now, you can book ticket in only two simple steps, as explained below.

Step 1: Send the details of train number, starting station, final station, travel date, class and passengers details (maximum 6 passengers) in prescribed format to 139.

 BOOK <Train No> <From City> <To City> <Travel Date (DDMM)> <Class> <Passenger1-Name> <Age> <Gender> <Passenger2-Name> <Age> <Gender> <ICICI> (Upto 6 passengers) 

For example:

If the sent SMS is correct as per format, the customer receives a Transaction ID from 139:

Booking Train Ticket Through IMPS


IMPS (Interbank Mobile Payment Service / Immediate Payment Service) is a Person - to - Merchant service that allows customers to make instant payment via mobile phones. IMPS facility is offered by several banks. The list of such banks is given below.

To get IMPS facility on your mobile, get your mobile registered with your account in any one of the above listed banks. Get MMID and M-PIN from the bank. MMID (Mobile Money Identifier) is a 7-digit number that is provided by Bank to customer. M-PIN is mobile PIN provided by the bank to customer. You will also need OTP (One Time Password) for booking your tickets.

If the sent SMS is correct as per format the following ticket confirmation message is received from 139:

Ticket Cancellation


Tickets booked by any of the above discussed methods can be cancelled by sending proper SMS to 139.  

Ticket Cancellation Procedure (Partial)


To make partial cancellation of a ticket, send SMS in the following format to 139.

CAN <10 Digit PNR> <IRCTC User ID> <Passenger Number>

For example:
CAN 3862561079 Raju 1 (up to 6 passengers)

You will receive following message from 139.

We have received your request to cancel tickets of <Passenger 1 Name> <Passenger 2 Name > for PNR Number 3862561079. Please confirm the cancellation by sending YES to 139.

For confirmation, send SMS to 139 in following format.

Yes

On successful cancellation, you will receive following message from 139.

Your ticket for <Passenger 1 Name> with PNR Number: 3862561079 is cancelled. Amount: 90 will be refunded in your account.

Ticket Cancellation Procedure (Full)


To make partial cancellation of a ticket, send SMS in the following format to 139.

CAN <10 Digit PNR> <IRCTC User ID>

For example:
CAN 3862561079 Raju

You will receive following message from 139.

We have received your request to cancel tickets of <Passenger Name> for PNR Number 3862561079. Please confirm the cancellation by sending YES to 139 or for any change in cancellation data, send a fresh request..

For confirmation, send SMS to 139 in following format.

Yes

On successful cancellation, you will receive following message from 139.

Your ticket for <Passenger Name> with PNR Number: 3862561079 is cancelled. Amount: 90 will be refunded in your account.

For Duplicate Tickets


To get duplicate ticket, please sen SMS in the following format.

TRANS<Trans ID as received>

You will get the duplicate ticket of original booked ticket.

Please note that SMS to 139 will be charged at the rate of Rs. 3 per SMS.
